Fifteen to eighteen months

At Niko's 15 month appt, we discovered that he had only gained 4 ounces in three months, putting him at the 15th percentile for weight. That's a pretty far drop from 95th. We now pour olive oil on most of his food, or spread butter on it. He's also drinking coconut milk, soy milk, and almond milk. He still prefers water over all of those. Niko's vocabulary is unbelievable. He tries to say words like "airplane" and tells us when he's filling his diaper. He also has started nodding and it's so much easier to communicate when he can tell you yes, that's what I want! He has started seeing a physical therapist to help him strengthen his muscles and gain the confidence to walk. He now has to wear boots to support his feet, but after only a few short weeks, he's worn a hole in them by crawling around with them on. Lately, he's been chewing up his Lamby's ears and tail so much that they need to be washed every other day. At 16 months, Niko is really loving music. Whenever a song on the CD ends, he immediately starts requesting "more, more" until the next one starts. He's taking a music class together with mom and Ari and loves to dance and even occasionally sing.

Birthday Party

Ari loves to run around and play, so we decided to have his 4th birthday party at an indoor gym called Monkey Bizness. We invited about 10 friends to join us. Ari decided he wanted lemon cupcakes with pink frosting. He's been enjoying a book lately called Pinkalicious and wanted his cupcakes to be pinkalicious! He helped bake them himself (and Niko helped too). We colored/flavored the frosting with real raspberries and they were so yummy. After Ari's party, we went to a Halloween party so he didn't get to open his presents until the morning of his actual birthday. It was a little like Christmas morning. We spent his actual birthday playing with all the new toys, riding bikes around the park, carving pumpkins, and having Yaya and Grandpa for dinner after Yaya returned from her trip to Greece. When we told Ari that he was finally FOUR, he had a hard time believing it, even though he's been saying he's four for over a month now. And when anyone tells him happy birthday, he says "happy birthday" back.

Sept to Dec 2011

Niko is old enough now that he really gets to interact with his brothers. He is also very vocal when they do something he doesn't like, such as take one of his cars or trucks away. Ari loves to make Niko laugh, especially at the dinner table, but also likes to bother him by growling or making noises close to his face. Alex is an excellent big brother, most of the time, but gets very frustrated when Niko throws things off his tray at dinner and says "if you throw it, it's all done." One of our favorite things to do is bike and walk together. Niko sits in the jogger while Alex and Ari bike ahead. All three boys also love to play in the backyard.

Three and a half to four

Ari is definitely three! He loves to be in control, has to do things his way, has strong opinions, and responds to all of Mom's requests with "Well, Mom..." We're trying to enjoy the last bit of his cute talking--the way he says "baf" for bath or "sank you" for thank you or "bampa" for Grandpa or "lellow" for yellow. He is an amazing singer and often insists on singing to us at bed time. It's especially cute to hear a three year old belt out Silent Night in the middle of the May. He still hates to go to bed and stays up much later than we'd like (often 1-2 hours past bedtime) but hopefully his need for little sleep will serve him well later in life. He takes forever to eat dinner but can gulp down dessert before everyone has been served. The kid is seriously obsessed with dessert right now. He knows all his upper and lower case letters, as well as their sounds, and loves to figure out what letters various words start with. He is also enjoying learning how to write and can write Arion extremely well. At 3y7m, Ari is writing so well. He has amazing handwriting and we have a hard time telling who is writing words on the board--he or Alex. He also draws great people with lots of details, like toes. At 3y8m, Ari insists he is four. Everything he does now is something that only 4 year olds do. He is also saying a lot of "we haven't done that in a year" or "we've never done that before" when he's really excited about something we're going to do.
